The DAR, founded in 1890, is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. Membership is open to any woman, 18 years or older--regardless of race, religion or ethnic background--who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.
DAR members volunteer more than 55,000 hours annually to veteran patients, award over $150,000 in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and support schools for the underprivileged with annual donations exceeding one million dollars.
DAR Headquarters is one of the world's largest buildings of its kind owned and maintained exclusively by women. It has the largest concert hall in Washington, DC and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985.
The Brooklyn Chapter, NSDAR, was organized March 2, 2005 and was named after The Battle of Brooklyn, the first Revolutionary War battle fought after the Declaration of Independence. The battle took place August 27, 1776 on the grounds of the Old Stone House and on the hill where Green-Wood Cemetery now stands.
Our members live in a number of Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, and Windsor Heights, to name a few. We are actively seeking new members, and have evening meetings to better accommodate working women. If you are interested in applying to join our chapter, please click here.
